IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It works by administering light energy to pigments like melanin or hemoglobin in the skin which absorb the calculated wavelengths. There, the energy generates gentle heat, eventually causing the pigmented areas to flake off or be absorbed by the body. Whereas other skincare treatments address the whole surface of the skin, IPL has the benefit of targeted treatment that doesn’t damage the surrounding area. With a package of treatments, IPL leaves behind brighter, clearer, more even-toned skin. That’s why IPL remains the gold standard in treating pigmentation.

IPL is one of the best options available for brown and red pigmentation like sun damage, visible veins, rosacea, freckles, acne scarring, melasma, age spots, and more. It can even be used on any area of the body, making it a very flexible option. If you’re bothered by the appearance of spider veins or brown spots, for example, IPL is the most effective way to get rid of them. IPL requires some pre-treatment steps including avoiding sun exposure and tanning to ensure your treatment is effective. IPL typically requires 2-4 sessions based on your goals and skin concerns. Once you’re ready, your skin will be prepared and treated. You’ll be given protective eye shields during treatment. Once the whole area is treated, you can return to your normal activities.

After treatment, it’s normal to have some redness and minor swelling. These side effects typically fade within the day. Over the next few days, your treated areas may become darker than usual – this is a normal part of the process, and the areas will eventually flake off or be absorbed. It can take 7-10 days for the skin to completely recover, but you’ll see noticeable improvement in your skin’s clarity and tone. Once you finish your initial treatment package, we recommend returning for maintenance treatments every 6-12 months to regularly get rid of seasonal sun damage. It’s essential to keep your skin covered with SPF 30+ daily to prevent pigmentation from coming back.

You will see improvement in skin tone and appearance in as little as one IPL photofacial treatment session, however, most patients undergo a minimum of three treatments with our Lumecca IPL for best results. The IPL photofacial treatment is determined based on the severity of skin damage, skin type and treatment results desired.

During your Lumecca IPL treatment, there will be a bright flash of light from the device which produces a sensation similar to that of a light rubber band snap. Redness and warming of the skin are normal after treatment, and usually subside within an hour. Most patients find the treatment to be tolerable. We do offer Pro-Nox, if needed. Anyone with vascular lesions, port wine stains, facial, truncal and leg telangiectasias, rosacea, erythema of rosacea, hemangiomas, angiomas and spider angiomas, poikilodenna of Civatte, superficial leg veins, hyperpigmentation, and freckles. Lumecca IPL is cleared for use on skin types I - IV.

Lumecca IPL can be used on all areas of the body. The most commonly treated areas are those regularly exposed to the sun such as the face, décolletage, hands, neck, legs and arms.

There is no downtime with Lumecca IPL. After treatment, redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal. These usually subside within an hour or two.

Over the next 24-48 hours you may see a darkening of pigmented spots; in the week afterwards the pigmented lesions flake off, leading to brighter, more flawless skin.
